As many as 2,527 state transport buses in Gujarat were on Thursday equipped with GPS in the first phase of connecting all buses run by the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) with the network.

State Transport Minister Vijay Rupani, who launched the system in the buses, said Gujarat has become the first state to have a GPS-connected public transport system.

This would ensure tracking the location of all state transport buses on a digital display terminal, he said.

In the second and final phase, over 5,000 buses would be equipped with GPS, Rupani said.

Soon, as many as 21 bus terminals in the state would be modernised and have GPS monitors to track buses, he added.

The GSRTC would also soon introduce a mobile app with which passengers would be able to book e-tickets, know the time-table of buses and track vehicles on different routes, according to the minister.

The GSRTC has already in place an online reservation facility, e-tendering system and electronic ticketing machines.
