Masked gunmen opened fire at a police car Monday in Marseille in southern France, media reported.
After shots were reportedly fired in the air near a housing estate north of Marseille Monday morning, police rushed to the scene, Xinhua news agency reported.
On their arrival at about 10 a.m., they were shot at while they were still in their cars, Pierre-Marie Bourniquel, head of public police in Marseille Elite, told news channel BFMTV. Nobody was injured in the shooting.
Police sealed off the neighbourhood of La Castellane, where the shooting took place. The GIPN special forces unit has been deployed, according to media reports.
Caroline Pozmentier, deputy mayor of Marseille, believed the incident was related to drug trafficking in the zone.
The shooting in Marseille happened just hours before French Prime Minister Manuel Valls was due to visit the city to hail a falling crime rate.
