At least three people were killed and several hundreds admitted to hospitals after a heatwave swept Japan over the weekend, officials said Sunday.

A 94-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a hospital in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, after she collapsed while working in a greenhouse near her home at around 4 p.m., Xinhua reported.

The temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91F) in central Tokyo Sunday by noon.

Temperatures topped 30 Celsius degree at 400 places, with a high of 36.3 Celsius degree recorded in the city of Tatebayashi in Gunma Prefecture and in the town of Ibigawa in Gifu Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Twenty-five locations across the country including Kyoto saw temperatures soar above 35 degrees Celsius, it said.

On Saturday, two people died and over 250 people were taken to hospitals due to heatstroke, the official said.
