At least two persons were killed and two others washed away in a deluge induced by heavy rains in Maharajganj on Monday even as monsoon torrents and water released by neighbouring Nepal continued to cause havoc in the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.

The Jharahi river continued to be in spate and an embankment was breached following which flood waters entered some villages.

Rivers were in spate in Gorakhpur and Siddharthanagar districts. More than a dozen people were injured in a house collapse in Maharajganj.

Rohin, Rapti, Jharahi and Pyaas rivers in Maharajganj were in spate and crossed their respective danger mark. Vehicular traffic on the Nautanwa-Thoothibari road was disrupted due to flooding and flood waters entered the famous Lehda temple here, an official told IANS.

The discharge of water at the Balmikinagar barrage was recorded at 3,92,050 cusecs in the morning. According to the daily report of the flood monitoring office, Baan Ganga, Jamuar Nala, Bhoodhi Rapti, Rapti, Telar Nala, Kooda Nadi and Ghoghi rivers were flowing precariously close to the danger mark of 93.42 metres.

Government officials said adequate arrangements were being made for rescue and relief and enough food items, medicines and other essentials were being given to people in the flood-affected areas.
