High priority to India-Iran ties: Modi

India accords high priority to its relations with Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif when the latter called on him on Friday.

"The prime minister recalled his meeting with President (Hassan) Rouhani of Iran and reiterated that India attached high priority to its relations with Iran," an official statement from the prime minister's office said.

Modi also congratulated Iran for reaching an agreement on Tehran's nuclear programme with the P5+1 group of world powers - the US, Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany - and expressed confidence that it would contribute to greater peace and stability in the region.

The prime minister also conveyed India's commitment to work with Iran for the development of the Chahabahar port that would have far reaching benefits, not only for the people of India and Iran but also for Afghanistan and the entire Central Asia region.

Both the leaders also exchanged views on regional developments, including in Afghanistan, West Asia and South Asia.

Foreign Minister Zarif stated that Iran considered India its strategic partner and could not forget the support India extended to Tehran during its difficult times.

Iran looked forward to working closely in all areas, including connectivity, oil and gas, investments, fertilisers, infrastructure development, among others, he said.

Zarif also extended an invitation on behalf of the president of Iran for Modi to visit that country.

The prime minister agreed to visit Iran at mutually convenient dates to be decided through diplomatic channels, according to the statement.
