The four-day monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh assembly will begin here on August 22, it was announced on Tuesday, and is likely to be stormy with the state going to polls later this year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to corner the ruling Congress over deteriorating law and order situation, leading to an increase in rape incidents in the state, besides on the corruption charges against Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

"Deteriorating law and order situation is one of the major issues. There is abnormal increase in rape incidents in the state, involving girl students," Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal told IANS.

He said the state government, especially the police, has failed to protect the life and property of the people of the state.

On the other hand, the government would try to highlight its achievements in the past four and a half years.

"We are ready for debate on all issues concerning the common man. We will highlight our achievements in the assembly," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said.
