Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Wednesday opened the five-day National Winter Carnival in this tourist resort in Kullu district by flagging off a carnival parade.
The Chief Minister said a number of activities at the festival have increased and over the years it has gained popularity amongst foreign tourists too.
"Initially, the winter carnival was started to promote the state's culture through presentation of folk dances and music. With passage of time, many other activities have also been added to it," he said in his address.
Over 120 Mahila Mandals or women groups of the area participated in the procession taken out on the first day. They were carrying messages of cleanliness, drug abuse, women empowerment, awareness against female foeticide and environment conservation.
Thakur said Kullu district was probably the best district in the state in preserving and conserving the rich cultural heritage.
