Heritage monument Akhand Chandi Palace in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba town will be renovated, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said on Tuesday.

A sum of Rs.6.48 crore will be spent to restore the palace, the chief minister said in a written reply in the assembly.

He said the department of tourism and civil aviation would be the executing agency.

The murals in the palace, dating back to the 19th century, were painted during Charhat Singh's reign (1808-1844 AD).

Most of the paintings are in shambles, an official of the department of language and culture told IANS.

The paintings have exquisite scenes from mythological episodes and lifestyle of locals.

One of the paintings depicts the great battle of the Mahabharata. Portraits of Britishers from the colonial era also attract researchers and tourists.
