Hoping that the GST bill would be ratified in the forthcoming budget session of parliament, BJP MP Chandan Mitra on Wednesday said the country's GDP would go up by 1 percent once the law came into force.

"GDP of the country will go up by 1 percent if the Goods and Services Tax bill is passed," Mitra said during an interaction at the MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industries here.

In an obvious reference to the Congress, he said the party which brought the GST Bill was now acting as a stumbling block in its implementation.

"I hope the GST would be cleared in the forthcoming budget session of parliament," he said.

On the current economic condition, Mitra said the country has the potential to grow at a rate of 8-9 percent per annum and achieve double digit growth by 2019.

Mentioning a few factors which could help India achieve growth, he said big ticket reforms like GST should be allowed, India should reach among the top 50 countries by 2020 in Ease of Doing Business Index and red tape should be removed.

He also pitched for implementation of a "proper, reasonable and fair land acquisition policy" and grooming of a skilled work force.

Mitra said none of these would happen unless big projects entailing thousands of crores of rupees as investment are made.
