Roma, May 18 (IANS/AkI) The leader of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, Matteo Salvini, has said he will do his utmost to make sure Italy never has a Muslim mayor.
"I really hope there will never be a Muslim mayor in Italy," Salvini told Radio 24's 'La Zanzara' current affairs programme.
"I will do everything I can to make sure Rome, Milan and other cities never get a mayor from the Muslim faith," he said.
Salvini's remarks came after the leader of the grassroots Five Star movement, Beppe Grillo, sparked outrage at the weekend when he made a joke about new London mayor Sadiq Kahn, a British Muslim of Pakistani origin.
