Hurriyat leaders on Wednesday announced an elaborate protest programme to protect article 35A that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement the Hurriyat said: "Any meddling with state subject law is only aimed at changing the demography of the state, the issue is directly related to our right of self-determination and so we all need to fight for it with unity and steadfastness".
The separatist leaders have asked people to observe a state wide strike on August 29 when the petition seeking abrogation of the law comes up for hearing in the Supreme Court.
The separatists have also asked lawyers, traders, civil society members and non-resident Kashmiris living outside to stage peaceful protests.
The article empowers the state legislature to define permanent residents of the state and their privileges.
