The Indian Air Force on Monday carried out rescue operations in flood-hit areas of Tamil Nadu and rescued 22 people, including 12 infants and six women, an official said.

"The rescue operations were carried out by Cheetah helicopters that took off from Tambaram and rescued people from Muduchuri Ashoknagar area which is completely submerged," the official said.

During the day, 100 litres of water and 150 food packets prepared by the IAF were also air-dropped.

With rain continuing in the state, two Mi-17V5 and two Advanced Light Helicopters were on standby.

The low pressure developing over the Bay of Bengal brought intermittent heavy showers on Monday, even as the toll from rain-related incidents in the past one week climbed to 70. The weather department has forecast easing down of rains in the coming days.
