Numbers of the immigrants arrested in Chicago surged in the first six months of the Trump administration, compared to the same period last year, a new data revealed on Thursday.

Data from the US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) revealed about a 30 per cent increase in Chicago arrests and deportations compared with the end of the Obama administration, Xinhua reported.

ICE arrested 4,503 immigrants in Chicago between January and the end of June.

According to federal law enforcement data, 2,725 were deported. Figures in the preceding months, in 2016, were significantly lower for both arrests of undocumented immigrants and what the agency called "removals."

The Justice Department this week revealed that federal immigration courts ordered 57,069 people to leave the US in the first six months of the Trump administration, a jump of nearly 31 per cent nationally compared with the same period last year.
