The sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day" will now release July 1, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the original movie hit the screens.
The original movie released on July 3, 1996. It grossed $817 million worldwide.
20th Century Fox had earlier thought of releasing the sequel July 3, 2015, but the date has now been pushed to July 1, 2016, reports variety.com.
Emmerich has been working on the sequel with "Independence Day" co-writer Dean Devlin and "White House Down" writer-producer James Vanderbilt.
Actor Will Smith, who played a pivotal role in the original, may not be seen in the sequel.
