India said on Thursday it was closely monitoring the situation in the Maldives where a state of emergency has been imposed and the vice president impeached.

"Maldives is a close neighbour, as you know we monitor developments in Maldives very carefully, it is important for us to know what is happening there," Vikas Swarup, spokesperson in the external affairs ministry, said in a media briefing.

The Maldives on Wednesday declared a month-long emergency in what has been extraordinary security measures following an explosion on a speedboat carrying President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on September 28 and the subsequent discovery of an arms haul.

On Thursday, the parliament of the Indian Ocean archipelago nation endorsed the state of emergency and impeached Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who was detained in connection with the explosion.

"We are of course monitoring developments there pertaining to the state of emergency and today's impeachment of the vice president very very carefully," Swarup said.
