Militancy can be controlled if India and Pakistan work together, according to the chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, I.A. Rehman.

Rehman made the comment while addressing an event on terrorism and sectarian strife in Pakistan, the Dawn reported on Monday.

He said: "When a nation is broken from within, when freedom of practicing religion is under threat, when your life above everything else is under threat, such (rightwing) factors become overbearing and set the discourse of a country. And this is a terrible thing to happen."

Rehman said that alongside Islamic seminaries, the curriculum of public schools was equally responsible for spreading hate and discrimination in Pakistani society.

He said history taught in public schools promoted hatred and sectarian strife rather than unity.
