Author J.K. Rowling has revealed that the reason Harry Potter named his son after character Snape was that it was a mark of gratitude to the former Potions teacher and Hogwarts' headmaster.

In the last Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2", the protagonist named his middle child Albus Severus, which, according to Rowling, was out of "forgiveness and respect" to Snape, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

During a discussion with a fan on Twitter, Rowling was asked: "Why did you pick Snape to name Harry's kid after? I'm genuinely curious as he was nothing but abusive towards everyone."

Disputing the idea that Snape truly disliked the wizard, Rowling proved her point by saying Snape sacrificed himself for the sake of Harry's family.

"Snape died for Harry out of love for Lily. Harry paid him tribute in forgiveness and gratitude," she replied.

"There's a whole essay in why Harry gave his son Snape's name, but the decision goes to the heart of who Harry was, post-war. In honouring Snape, Harry hoped in his heart that he too would be forgiven. The deaths at the Battle of Hogwarts would haunt Harry forever," she added.
