Jet Airways Thursday said it has appointed Gary Kenneth Toomey as its chief executive pending regulatory approvals.

The appointment comes after the airlines' chief executive Nikos Kardassis quit the company in May 2013. Kardassis left the airline after serving two terms as chief executive, initially between 1993 and 1999, and again from October 2009 till May 2013.

"We need a dynamic executive with deep knowledge of and experience in the airline industry to lead the next phase of our development," said Naresh Goyal, chairman, Jet Airways.

"Toomey has extensive experience in domestic and international airline management, and the right credentials and skills to take Jet Airways forward."

According to the company, Toomey, 58, an Australian national, has previously served as president and chief executive of the Air New Zealand group and as chief executive of Airlines PNG in Papua New Guinea.

"Prior to these roles, he (Toomey) was deputy chief executive officer, chief financial officer (CFO) and executive director of Qantas Airways and before that CFO of Australian Airlines.
