The Jharkhand Police is embracing yoga to help its personnel cope with the stress and strain of dealing with crime and the Maoist insurgency.

"The intent is to help the policemen reduce their fatigue and tension, so that they can discharge their duties better," a police official said on Tuesday.

The yoga programme will cover the Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP), Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), District Police, State Industrial Security Force (SISF), Special Task Force (STF), Jharkhand Police Academy and Jungle Warfare School.

A home department official said: "The police headquarters has already been allocated Rs 1.44 crore for buying equipment and other material for yoga training."

The classes are likely to begin on June 21, the International Yoga Day.

Trainers would be hired on a contractual basis.
