It took eight years and eight nominations for "Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm to finally grab an Emmy award for his iconic portrayal of Don Draper in the popular TV series. The actor took home the award in the Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

The actor, who ditched the stairs and crawled on to the stage to take the award, thanked his friends and cast for supporting him. He was awarded at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, which was held here on Sunday.

Hamm didn't forget to thank his former-girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, from whom he recently split after 18 years together.

"It's impossible to have done this show without this incredible cast, these incredible people, this incredible crew," Hamm said, adding that it was "incredibly impossible" not to include those who've made a personal impact on his everyday life.

The 44-year-old star gave a special mention to his family for being with him at each step of his life.

"I want to thank the people to whom I owe this incredible debt. Families -- who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me along this strange, strange road," he said.

He was pitted against Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards"), Jeff Daniels ("The Newsroom"), Bob Odenkirk ("Better Call Saul"), Kyle Chandler ("Bloodline") and Liev Schreiber ("Ray Donovan") for the award.

The actor expressed gratitude to everyone who has been part of his journey.

"Thank you all very much. I would not be standing here without you," he concluded.
