Calling him a "true Indian", Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expressed sorrow at the death of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and said India got recognition at the world stage through his work.
Politicians cutting across party lines condoled the sudden death of Kalam.
In a condolence message, Yadav said the 'Missile Man' had immense attachment with Uttar Pradesh and gave many valuable suggestions for development of the state.
Kalam was recently in Kannauj, where he flew with the chief minister to inaugurate a solar power plant in Tirwa. He had also administered an oath to the villagers for a clean and green environment.
"In his passing away, Uttar Pradesh has lost a sincere well-wisher," Yadav said.
State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpayi said Kalam's demise was a great loss to the nation.
"He played a crucial and significant role in making India a nuclear power and was a grounded person notwithstanding the high offices he held all through his life," he said.
