The Kamarajar Port, formerly known as Ennore Port, will develop a port in Puducherry through a special purpose vehicle and also develop a free trade zone or special economic zone near its current location, said a top company official here Thursday.
The port is also looking at starting cruise service from here to Kanyakumari touching different coastal tourist destinations, the official said.
Speaking at a conference on "Approach to Integrated Maritime Systems" here organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) the port's chairman and managing director M.A. Bhaskarachar, said a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Puducherry government for the development of the port.
He said the port would be developed by a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The feasibility report has been prepared.
According to Bhaskarachar, the Kamarajar Port is planning to develop FTZ/SEZ on the 647 acres acquired from the salt department.
He said the port has held talks with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) for a cruise service from here to Kanyakumari via Mahabalipuram, Puducherry and Rameswaram.
