The Kerala unit of the Congress has started preparing for the Lok Sabha polls after former Defence Minister A.K. Antony said last week that the Central government might go for elections later this year.

Congress General Secretary Thampanoor Ravi on Tuesday said that to make the party election-ready, they have started preliminary work and the first meeting was held in Kottayam on Monday.

"We are ensuring to see that the rank and file of the party is rejuvenated to face the very crucial general elections.

"As the first step, we decided to convene a district-level meeting. This will end on March 3 in Thrissur when we would have covered all the 14 districts. The entire top brass of the party would participate in each of these meetings," said Ravi.

The Congress-led UDF has 12 out of 20 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the ruling CPI-M-led Left has eight. The BJP is yet to open its account in the Lok Sabha from Kerala but it has one seat in the 140-member assembly.
