A 20 percent special pay, appointing clean police officials, speeding up vigilance probes and two new courts are some of the measures the Kerala government is taking for more effective functioning of the vigilance department.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of top vigilance officials of the state here Friday, State Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that the present problem is of inordinate delays in disposing off cases, besides lack of credibility.

He said that two new courts are already in place to speed up trials as delays help corrupt officials to get away.

"We have put forward a recommendation to give an additional 20 percent pay to all vigilance officials. Besides, Dec 9 being World Anti-Corruption Day, we have asked that all students in the state be administered an anti-corruption pledge," added Chennithala.
