US Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to India Saturday for an economic summit, the State Department said Tuesday.

The top American envoy will land in Ahmedabad, the largest city of the western Indian state of Gujarat, for a biennial summit aiming to attract foreign investment for the state, Xinhua reported citing spokesperson Jennifer Psaki as saying.

She said Kerry and top American business leaders will highlight the "critical role" US technology plays in economic growth across India and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as in boosting trade and investment between the two countries.

This is the first time the US will join the so- called Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit as a partner country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit.

President Barack Obama is also scheduled to travel to India this month to attend the country's Republic Day celebration.

Modi visited the US in September last year and met with Obama at the White House.
