Celebrating West Bengal's rich sartorial heritage, a new e-commerce craft house is providing direct interface between weavers and connoisseurs to popularise the 'tant' (cotton) and silk weaves from the region.
"Bengal's exclusive handloom tradition needs to be recognised across the world. Tant and silk from Bengal should be available across the world. Kiukart (the portal) will provide direct interface between the weavers and the connoisseurs across India and the world," said Souvik Das, the portal's founder.
The site showcases the uniqueness of 'tant' and silks like Baluchari and Murshidabadi with information about their origins, special techniques and characteristics, added Das.
Designer Agnimitra Paul said the initiative would encourage the weavers and their families to pursue the traditional craft.
"Tant or cotton saris from Bengal are known for their light and airy quality, floral design and thread work that carry the essence of old Bengal. But no one seems to know the people who weave these exquisite pieces," Paul said.
