His body was found in a pool of blood near his residence in Rajendra Nagar area here on Friday evening.
Police teams swung into action and nabbed the accused, a 30-year-old carpenter Pritam G. Patil, who had done some furniture in Kirwale's home recently.
The investigators said Patil had a dispute over an outstanding amount of Rs 25,000, which allegedly triggered the attack and murder of Kirwale.
Earlier in the day, thousands of city residents paid homage to Kirwale, a renowned Dalit scholar, researcher, writer and activist, at Bindu Chowk, the central part of Kolhapur, said his close associate Alok Jatratkar.
