Beating drums and bursting firecrackers, Kolkatans partied on the streets Sunday after India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 76 runs in the World Cup at Adelaide Oval.

Youths carrying aloft the tricolour or draped in the flag rode the various city localities on motor bikes shouting eulogies to skipper M.S. Dhoni and man of the match Virat Kohli.

The fans sang songs, danced on the main roads, smeared one another with gulal and distributed sweets, as the city turned into a celebration zone, minutes after India's emphatic win.

After posting an impressive 300/7, India bundled out Pakistan for 224 in the Pool B match, recording their sixth straight win over the neighbouring nation in the showpiece event.

Photos of paceman Mohammed Shami, who plays for Bengal in domestic cricket, was also displayed by jubilant fans.

Earlier, the streets wore a deserted look and shops and cinema halls were largely empty as people stayed indoor to watch the live broadcast of the game.
