A 21-year-old labourer was killed when he was hit by a crane rigger at the construction site of the ongoing Mumbai Metro-7 corridor here on Saturday, an official said.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Joint Project Director Dilip Kawathkar said that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Hari Om Yadav was preparing a pier cap erection at the Simplex site on the Dahisar-Andheri Metro corridor.
"Prima facie, the accident took plae due to a mechanical problem of the crane while pulling in the rear right outrigger of the crane for positioning. The rigger suddenly pulled and hit the labourer on his head," he said.
Yadav was rushed first to the Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Centre in Jogeshwari and later to the Siddhar Municipal General Hospital in Goregaon where doctors declared him dead.
The MMRDA has ordered the general consultants and related agencies to investigate the incident and submit their report within three days.
It has also directed the contractors to impart fresh training to all the crane operators immediately, and pay compensation to Yadav's family.
