Struggling La Liga football side Las Palmas sacked coach Paco Ayestaran on Thursday morning, the club has confirmed.

Ayestaran, who was Las Palmas' second coach of the season after Manolo Marquez resigned in September, was sacked following a 3-2 home defeat to Deportivo la Coruna in the King's Cup, even though Las Palmas qualified for the next round 6-4 on aggregate following a 4-1 win in the first leg, reports Xinhua news agency.

That win was the only victory Ayestaran oversaw during his spell at the club, suffering seven defeats and a draw in his other eight matches in charge.

The draw came away to Real Sociedad last weekend, putting an end to eight straight league defeats for Las Palmas and 13 (a league record) for Ayestaran, who had lost his last seven matches in charge of his former club, Valencia.

Las Palmas are thought to be interested in former Rayo Vallecano boss Paco Jemez, who has decided not to continue coaching in Mexico, but will face competition from Alaves, who sacked their second coach of the campaign, Gianni de Biassi earlier in the week, and are also thought to be interested in Jemez.
