In an attempt to gear up its organisation after a series of electoral setbacks, the West Bengal unit of the CPI-M Wednesday called for launching movements and activating all ranks of the party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Stating that success in West Bengal was crucial to the party playing a bigger role in the national stage, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Biman Bose said: "We have to fight the elections by activating the party rank and file and increasing mass contact."

Bose, who was addressing state committee members, said: "We have to organise the poor people of the rural and urban areas and launch a wave of movements and struggles."

In a statement, the CPI-M state committee warned people against activities of communal and separatist forces in the state and called for thwarting such forces by building up campaigns and class struggles.

The CPI-M-led Left Front has fared poorly in all elections held in the state starting from the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

In 2011, it lost power in West Bengal after ruling the state for 34 years at a stretch.
