An Egyptian court has sentenced 11 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which ousted president Mohamed Morsi hails, to life in prison for violent acts against the army last month, Xinhua reported Tuesday citing state-run Ahram website.

Forty five other Muslim Brotherhood members will spend five years behind bars while eight people - some from the Muslim Brotherhood or Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya, a hardline Islamist group - were acquitted.

The suspects were accused of attacking the armed forces, setting three churches ablaze and burning nine armoured vehicles that cost 20 million Egyptian pounds ($2.86 million), the report said.

They were also charged with targeting government institutions, blocking roads and spreading chaos in the port city of Suez after security forces broke up pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country Aug 14.
