After clinching the World Twenty20 women's title beating Australia here, West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor on Sunday heaped praise on her team for giving their best and said she was waiting for this moment for a long time.

The West Indies beat three-time defending champions Australia by eight wickets in the final at the Eden Gardens here.

For the West Indies, Hayley Matthews (66) and captain Stafanie Taylor (59) were the top two run-scorers chasing Australia's total of 148/5.

"I've been waiting for this a long time and it has come at the right time. We played some fantastic cricket today. Didn't get the start we wanted with the bowling but the batting has done it for us," skipper Stafanie said at the post-match presentation ceremony here.

"Fantastic to know that the men's team were behind us. (Men's captain) Darren Sammy sent me a text this morning that we were going to win, just wanted us to back ourselves and give our best," she said.

This is the first time the West Indies have won the trophy. By winning, they halted Australia's juggernaut that had won three consecutive World T20s from 2010 onwards.
