Within hours of the Centre announcing reduction in prices of petrol and diesel, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced slashing VAT on petrol by Rs 2.50/litre.

"This will make petrol cheaper by Rs 5.00 in Maharashtra, after a relief of Rs 2.50 per litre of petrol and diesel announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley," Fadnavis said.

He assured that this would prove to be a huge relief to the people of state burdened by the highest prices of petrol and diesel anywhere in the country over the past few weeks, with petrol crossing Rs 93/litre in some parts like Parbhani on Thursday.
