Five Maldivian nationals were arrested for suspected involvement in the failed assassination attempt on Maldives President Abdullah Yameen last month, Malaysian police said on Friday.

All the suspects were deported to their original country, Xinhua quoted Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu Bakar as saying in a statement.

The police counter-terrorism unit arrested a 47-year-old Maldives national who worked as an "investment ambassador" during a raid on a condominium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, the statement said.

Four other Maldives nationals, including two men and two women aged between 28 and 38, were also arrested, it added.

Police said the operation was based on the cooperation with Maldives authorities.

Yameen escaped unhurt when an explosion ripped through part of the his speedboat on September 28, but his wife and two security officials were injured.

Vice President Ahmed Adheeb was arrested for his alleged involvement in the attack.
