Malaysian authorities on Monday closed schools in several states and capital Kuala Lumpur due to the ongoing haze condition in the country.

The education ministry announced the closure as the Air Pollution Index (API) level has remained 'unhealthy' as of Monday, The Malaysian Star reported.

"The closure will affect 1,909,842 students in 3,029 schools nationwide," the ministry said.

The constant haze condition in Malaysia, Singapore and large portions of Indonesia has sparked health issues, affecting flights and the closure of numerous schools and colleges.

The schools were previously closed from October 4-6.

The haze is being caused by the forest fires in Indonesia's Sumatra and Borneo islands.
