Malaysian police will question former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad over his statements made during a massive rally on Sunday, local media reports on Wednesday.

English-language newspaper New Straits Times quoted Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar as saying that the police are keen to know more of the comments made by Mahathir at the rally, Xinhua reported.

"In his speech, he had made all sorts of accusations. We want to know further and where he had obtained the information," he said.

Massive demonstrations were organised by the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections or Bersih on Saturday and Sunday, which saw tens of thousands of protestors coming out on the streets and expressing their dissatisfaction with the government.

According to police, the rally was illegal and action would be taken against the organisers.

Mahathir, the country's longest serving prime minister, showed up at the rally.
