A herd of elephants trampled a man to death on Monday in West Bengal's Bankura district, a forest official said.

The incident happened in Gokul Mathura village under Barjora Forest Range in the district.

"Biswanath Soren (65) was sleeping under a bamboo bush near the jungle when a herd of 11 elephants passing through the area attacked him. The elephants trampled him to death," said Divisional Forest Officer Bankura (North) S.C. Das.

In April, a forest guard was killed in tusker attack in Onda under Panchet Forest Division in the district.

In another incident in Jalpaiguri district, a forest official received minor injuries on Sunday after being attacked by an elephant.

"A herd of elephants Sunday had entered the Bhandiguri tea estate. While trying to drive them away, range officer Sanjay Dutta was attacked by one and sustained injuries in his hand. He was later discharged from a hospital," said Divisional Forest Officer, Jalpaiguri, Bidyut Sarkar.
