A 30-year-old man's two fingers were chopped off in West Bengal's Murshidabad district for protesting against drinking of alcohol in the open in his locality, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in Cossimbazar, some 200 km from Kolkata.

The victim Tushar Mitra, who was assaulted and lost two fingers of his right hand, had objected against some people regularly drinking in the area and passing lewd comments at women.

"Mitra has been admitted to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. We have registered a case and are looking into the matter. Nobody has so far been arrested in this regard," said a police officer.

Mitra said passing by the area had become a nightmare due to the anti-social elements who regularly indulged in drinking and passed lewd comments at women.

Last year, 21-year-old Sourav Chowdhury was killed for protesting against illegal hooch dens in Barasat of North 24 Parganas district.
