A Florida-based man who shot dead his wife and later posted a photo of the blood-spattered body on the social networking site Facebook has been convicted of second-degree murder, media reported on Thursday.

Thirty-three year old Derek Medina, posted shortly after the gruesome killing in August 2013: "I am going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand any more with the abuse, so I did what I did."

Later, Medina admitted to the police taking a cellphone photo of 27-year-old Jennifer Alfonso's dead body and uploading it on Facebook, aljazeera.com reported.

The jurors discarded the argument that Medina acted in self-defence when he shot Alfonso eight times at their Miami residence.

"No family should ever have to see their daughter killed and then exhibited worldwide on the internet like some macabre trophy to a husband's anger as was Jennifer Alfonso," state attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement.

"Far too often this kind of domestic violence leads to injury and death. That's why we must end all forms of domestic violence," Rundle added.
