"Friends" star Matthew Perry, who enjoyed a successful career for a decade, has dealt with alcohol and pills problems in his personal life. At 43, he is sober and willing to help other addicts.

For playing Chandler Bing on the popular TV show, that went off air in 2004, he earned $1 million per episode, but off-screen he was struggling.

"I had a big problem with alcohol and pills and I couldn't stop. Eventually things got so bad that I couldn't hide it, and then everybody knew," people.com quoted Perry as saying.

Years after battling with his addiction, Perry got sober.

"Something clicked. You have to want the help," he said.

Now, he is dedicated to helping other addicts. He offered his former Malibu beach home for men's sober living facility named Perry House.

Perry is also becoming an advocate for drug courts. Through this, non-violent substance users receive treatment instead of incarceration for offences.

Perry said sobriety and helping others helped in finding "true happiness" in his life.

"The interesting reason that I can be so helpful to people now is that I screwed up so often. It's nice for people to see that somebody, who once struggled in their life is not struggling any more," said Perry, who recently starred in "Go On".
