German tennis player Florian Mayer defeated countryman Alexander Zverev 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the final of the Gerry Weber Open here on Sunday.

Mayer, who has been plagued by injuries and entered the grass-court event ranked 192nd in the world, had not won a title since Bucharest five years ago, reports Efe.

The Gerry Weber Open is only the second title won by Mayer, who needed an hour and 55 minutes to beat Zverev.

The 19-year-old Zverev has made two finals this year and come away empty-handed from both.

The 32-year-old Mayer was able to capitalise on the inexperince of Zverev, who struggled in the third set.

Mayer broke the teenager in the sixth game of the third set and went up 4-2, then he consolidated the break and held on for the win.
