The US First Lady on her second day in Japan visited a school in southeastern Tokyo where she tried her hand at Shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy.

Melania Trump, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife Akie, paid a visit to the Kyobashi Tsukiji Elementary School. They were received by some 300 students and teachers, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

She was dressed in a navy blue Christian Dior dress and in blue snakeskin Manolo Blahnik pumps. Melania Trump personally greeted several students, took photos with them and attended a Shodo class.

After visiting the school, Melania Trump and Akie Abe had lunch at Akasaka Palace.

The visit is part of the cultural programme of the US First Lady, who also visited a pearl store on Sunday in the upmarket Tokyo neighbourhood of Ginza, where she was shown the process used to obtain them.

Japan is the first stop of the Asian tour undertaken by US President Donald Trump and the First Lady. The couple will later visit South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
