Stressing gender equality was extremely important for Indian society, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said that there was a need for the Indian men to understand the potential of women in various arena.
"It is very important for the Indian men to discard their anti women mindset. They have to realise the potential women have in terms of contributing towards the Indian society," he said at a conclave organised to mark the International Women Day titled Loreal Paris Women of Worth in collaboration with news channel NDTV.
Abdullah said that Indian men continue to be conservative despite awareness and do not want the women fraternity to be equal.
"India also neeeds to realise that if it wants to rise then women empowerment is very much required," he said.
The Delhi High Court's first woman judge Leela Seth, who was also present, said that there was a need to change the mindset of the men in the society towards women.
