August sales threw up mixed results for the automobile sector, with passenger car manufacturers making gains and commercial vehicle-makers losing steam, data released by the auto companies Monday showed.
High interest rates, rising fuel prices and an overall slowdown in the economy has dented nearly all the automobile manufacturers. However, good export demand arising out of a depreciating rupee value helped companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Bajaj Auto.
The country's largest car-maker, Maruti Suzuki's sales grew by 61.2 percent at 87,323 units in August, due to healthy domestic and export demand. The company had sold 54,154 units in August, 2012.
The company's Manesar plant was locked out in August 2012 following labour unrest.
There was a sharp rise in the company's exports. Maruti Suzuki exported just 11,305 units in the month under review, 180.9 percent less than 4,025 units sold overseas during the same month last year.
The company's domestic sale increased by 51.6 percent to 76,018 units during the month under review as compared to 50,129 units sold in August 2012.
