BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav on Friday said his party is confident that people of Mizoram will elect a non-Congress government in the assembly elections in December, fulfilling the saffron outfit's target to build a "Congress-mukt (free) Northeast".

"We are very confident that the voters of Mizoram will reject the Congress and elect a non-Congress government in the state. So it will certainly be a 'Congress-mukt' northeast in terms of governments," Madhav said at the India Today Conclave (East) 2018 here.

The BJP leader, who is also the party in-charge for the Northeastern states, said Congress as a political party will continue to exist but left it to Congress President Rahul Gandhi to decide about his party's future in the region.

"Congress as a political party will continue to remain. Its existence as a party is not in our hand, it is in the hands of (Congress President) Rahul Gandhi. As far as I am concerned, it will be a Congress-mukt Northeast," he added.

Among the eight northeastern states in the country, Mizoram is presently the only state under Congress rule.

In the 2013 assembly poll, the Congress had won 34 seats and made Lal Thanhawala the chief minister, while the BJP has no MLA at present.

The saffron outfit has recently announced that it would fight all the 40 assembly seats in the state alone, but the party might forge an alliance with like-minded parties in a post-poll scenario.

Madhav had previously claimed that if voted to power, BJP will construct a four lane highway across Mizoram linking both Myanmar and Bangladesh which would ensure access to the international market and open up the east-west corridor for trade.
