Mahindra MSTC Recycling Private Limited (MMRPL), which is betting big on the upcoming scrap policy, is planning to set up three more collection and dismantling (C&D) centres along with its existing facility at Noida and is also expecting to commission its shredding plant at Dehej in next year, an official said on Tuesday.

The joint venture between Mahindra and MSTC had commenced its C&D centre on a 6-acre leased land at Noida about two months back and collected 450 end-of-life vehicles both passenger and commercial so far.

"We are planning to set up three more collection and dismantling centres. In Chennai, we have finalised the location. One each will come in Kolkata and Mumbai. One shredding plant can also be come up in Kolkata along with the C&D centre," MSTC's Chairman and Managing Director B.B. Singh said.

The recycler started taking out parts of end-of-life vehicles at the C&D centre at Noida and selling them through its e-commerce portal to recyclers, who are authorised by Central Pollution Control Board, he said, adding that the centre has a capacity of breaking 50 vehicles every day.

"The shredding plant at Gujarat's Dahej with a one lakh tonne capacity will commission not before July next year," Singh said.

On selection of location for the Dahej plant he said, if there is "no adequate supply from domestic market", the company will explore imports from the Gulf countries.

He also said India is currently importing seven million tonnes of shredded scrap. AA

"There will be a requirement of 70 such shredding plants to negate existing imports of shredded scraps and about 300 C&D centres are required to be set up. We are betting on the upcoming scrap policy," Singh added.
