Days after a man was lynched by a mob in Uttar Pradesh's Dadri city over suspected consumption of beef, two youths were beaten up in the state's Mainpuri city on Friday after allegedly being found slaughtering a cow. Police rescued the two.
Police had a tough time rescuing the two youngsters, who have now been admitted to a local medical facility.
Violence broke out in the city's Quraishiana locality after some people were allegedly caught slaughtering a cow. As the news spread, several people took to the streets and beat up the two men.
When police reached the scene, the mob resorted to stone-pelting. A police jeep was set on fire, forcing police to resort to a cane charge. They also fired blanks in the air.
Heavy police reinforcements were rushed to the area and senior district officials were monitoring the situation, a senior official told IANS.
After police rescued the accused, residents put the cow's carcass on a cart and blocked the road. Mainpuri is the pocket borough of the Samajwadi Party and its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has represented it in the Lok Sabha many times.
