Prime Minister Narendra Modi told BJP MPs on Sunday that "they are not there for power but to serve people" and asked them to believe in "janata (public) and nobody else".

"We have not come here for power, we are here to serve the country," Modi said, adding that they must believe in people and nobody else.

He also said that the government should always be thankful to the people for reposing their faith in it and electing them with a complete majority.

He told them what the poor of the country wanted from the government. "Is it bad to dream that every poor of the country has his own house and toilet," he said.

Talking about his government's plans and schemes, the prime minister said it was taking steps to make life easy for the poor and Dalits of the country.

If a daughter of a Muslim or a Dalit remains uneducated the entire plan to take the nation forward is defeated, he said while discussing his 'Beti bachao' (Save Daughter) scheme.

He also discussed the coming parliament session and how the MPs should defend government policies.

Modi has already asked party MPs to visit their constituencies and take feedback on various government policies.

The prime minister also discussed with them his recently concluded three-nation tour and India's success in rescuing Indians from Yemen and lauded ministers Sushma Swaraj and V.K. Singh for their efforts for the same.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes just days before the Modi government completes a year in office.
