Modi hasn't been able to enforce Lokpal: Congress

The Congress on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his claims on checking corruption, and said that he has still not been able to enforce Lokpal.

Modi on Saturday said his government was working with determination to fulfil its promises to people and had been able to check corruption leakages to the tune of Rs.36,000 crore.

The Lokpal Act came into force from January 16, 2014, after assent from President Pranab Mukherjee.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives lectures on corruption, yet he has done nothing on his promise to enforce Lokpal," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

"Lokpal is there in the statute books. For two years, it has been shifted from committees to CVC (Central Vigilance Commission), nothing has happened," said Singhvi.

Talking about the schemes launched by the Modi government, Singhvi said that most of the schemes were initiated by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) while these were just re-branded by this government.

"Modi government has only re-branded the old UPA schemes. But, they have not been able to improve on the UPA's performance. Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana was renamed Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana," he said.

"UPA electrified 12,000 villages per year, Modi government has only managed 2,864 per year. On Swachh Bharat Mission, the Modi government is short by 8.62 crore on its own targets."

"Of the toilets built, 42 percent don't have any water supply. NSSO (National Sample Survey Organisation) reports show that 44 percent toilets have no access to drains," he added.
